Global Innovation Fund (GIF) and PATH Partner on new Thrive Fund
This $120 million fund will invest in early- and growth-stage technologies that strengthen public health amidst rising temperatures and extreme weather events.
The Global Innovation Fund (GIF), which has a long history of investing in poverty-advancing innovation private sector solutions, announced in late May, that it was partnering with one of the leaders in health innovation in the Global South, PATH, to launch The Thrive Fund, a new $120 million health-climate impact fund investing exclusively in early- and growth-stage technologies that strengthen public health amidst rising temperatures and extreme weather events.
The Fund will rely on new models of financing to help “accelerate the adoption and rapid deployment of transformative health innovations in emerging markets through patient capital and knowledge support, enhancing health systems and community resilience.”
The intent is to blend different types if investment and technical support into solutions that are geared towards health innovation solution providers, who can scale up quickly and reach multiple millions of people across the world that are suffering due to the overlap of climate and health challenges.
What I find most exciting is how willing GIF and PATH are to use different types of patient capital (ie low interest loan products, forgivable loans and maybe even grants if we are lucky) to help incentivize investment in very difficult scenarios around the world, but where new technologies and solutions can make a massive difference to global health.
